As part of the Caloundra Coalition of State Schools, Talara students and staff undertake a variety of activities to ensure a smooth transition to our local state secondary schools.
During Year 6, coalition primary schools will work together with the four local state secondary sites – Caloundra State High School, Kawana Waters State College, Meridan State College and Baringa State Secondary College, to provide a comprehensive and supportive program to assist both you and your student to make the transition to junior secondary schooling. Key dates in Year 6 are High School Experience Day in June and High School Orientation Day in December.
Similar to primary school, all four coalition secondary sites have an Enrolment Management Plan (EMP) and corresponding catchment boundary. Students are guaranteed enrolment at the school that is indicated as their ‘in-catchment’ school. Parents can determine in which catchment they live by using the EdMap website (http://www.qgso.qld.gov.au/maps/edmap/ ), the method used by all coalition secondary schools to determine if a student is living ‘in-catchment’. It is important that you and your student identify your ‘in-catchment’ high school and get to know more about the school in the final years of primary school.
These are the ways in which you can start getting ready for Junior Secondary:
Check in which high school catchment you reside to determine your ‘in-catchment’ secondary school
Check the school’s website for Year 7 scholarship information
Consider if your child is interested in applying for a Program of Excellence or Extension Program and set some goals to help them meet the entry requirements
Every student must have a BYO device – check the school website for specifications
Download the QSchools app and add your ‘in-catchment’ high school to receive information updates
Attend an information session
