Council encourages parents to walk with young children and talk to them
about pedestrian and road safety. If you live far from your school,
park the car at least a kilometre away and walk the rest of the way.
Walk to school safety tips for young children:
✅Always cross at pedestrian crossings or lights, even if you have to walk further. ✅Wait for the crossing supervisor to stop cars or the green walk signal. ✅Where there is no crossing or lights, pick the safest crossing point where there are no parked cars. ✅Look with your eyes and listen with your ears to be sure there are no cars coming. ✅When you are certain there are no cars coming, cross quickly to the other side while still looking and listening. ✅Walk on the footpath or pathway and keep left in case a bike needs to pass you. ✅Stop at driveways to check that no cars are reversing or entering the driveway. ✅Hold an adult's hand if you are under 11 or still learning to walk safely to school.15/05/2
